Short answer: Both courses are an MBA from Lovely Professional University. The LPU Online MBA costs ₹40,400 per semester (or ₹50,000 without LPU’s current 20% Student Grant). It includes live lectures over the weekend, videos and online exams. The LPU Distance MBA costs only ₹16,500 per semester. This includes study materials and Personal Contact Programme classes. If you want live teaching and structure go for the online course. If you are looking for the cheapest option go for the Distance Course.

Distance is clearly the cheaper route. Here are both fee options as LPU publishes them:

There are two things to note with the online course. Firstly, the 20% Student Grant is not available for ever. The page states “Valid till 7 Nov 2026 (Terms & Conditions Apply)”. Secondly, if all 4 semesters are to be paid for with the grant it would be 4 x ₹40,400 = ₹1,61,600. However, LPU do not specify a total cost for 4 semesters with the grant. It is best to confirm with LPU. The actual cost of 4 semesters would be ₹2,00,000.

How you study in each mode
LPU Online MBA
LPU state this course is a “LIVE + Recorded” course. You will have live lectures from faculty members over the weekend. Video recordings of lectures. Master classes from industry experts and access to LinkedIn Learning. All of this is provided on the LPU Online learning platform and mobile app. It is recommended to spend 8-10 hours per week. New batches start every 6 months.
LPU Distance MBA
You will have study materials, e-books and assignments provided via LPU e-Connect and the LPU Touch mobile app. You will also have interactive PCP classes with faculty members and fellow students. As well as master classes. This is a much more self paced course. The majority of the learning will be from the study materials and the PCP classes will be for clearing any doubts.
If you learn best from being taught by someone on a set schedule then the online course will be best for you. The live lectures over the weekend are what you are paying extra for.
Exams and evaluation
LPU Online states that exams for online-mode programmes are conducted online and that there are no offline exams. Its feature list mentions online proctored examinations.
LPU Distance Education says exams, along with study material and assignments, are accessed through LPU e-Connect. It doesn’t spell out the exam format on the programme page, so check the LPU DE programme guide or ask LPU whether you’ll take exams online or at a centre before you enrol.
Degree, recognition and DEB ID
Both are LPU degrees, and LPU states that it is accredited NAAC A++ with a score of 3.68 on a 4-point scale.
- Online MBA: LPU says the degree is entitled by the UGC Distance Education Bureau, that its MBA and MCA programmes are AICTE approved, and that online-mode degrees are treated at par with regular degrees. LPU also notes that, under UGC rules, the mode of delivery is printed on the back of each degree and mark sheet.
- Distance MBA: LPU Distance Education describes it as a UGC-recognised and AICTE-approved distance MBA and says it is accepted for international education through WES recognition.
Whichever you choose, you’ll need a DEB ID (an ID from the UGC Distance Education Bureau) to apply; both LPU sites say it’s mandatory for ODL and online programmes. We recommend checking LPU’s entry on the UGC-DEB list for your session on deb.ugc.ac.in before you pay.

Placement support in each mode
- Online MBA: LPU says it runs placement drives for online learners, along with a Professional Enhancement Programme covering aptitude, soft skills, CV and interview preparation, and alumni connect.
- Distance MBA: LPU Distance Education says learners can use “multiple placement drives across diverse locations”.
Neither site guarantees a job, and LPU doesn’t publish separate placement figures for each mode, so treat placement support as a bonus rather than the reason to choose.
